Kefalonia Yacht Charter Guide

Charter holiday sailing in Kefalonia

Kefalonia or Cephalonia, is the largest and most mountainous island of the Ionian Islands and the third most populous after Corfu and Zakynthos. It is located opposite the entrance of the Gulf of Patras, north of Zakynthos, south of Lefkada, and west of Ithaca. The island has an area of approximately 773 sq.km and much of it is occupied by the Ainos mountain range, which has been declared as a National Park. It is famous for the unique in the world ‘’Cephalonian Black Fir’’, which has given it the name ‘’Monte Nero’’ (Black Mountain), as well as for the herds of small wild horses of the ‘’Equus caballus’’ breed.

Argostoli, the modern capital of the island, is busy and during the summer season has to offer a variety of interesting events and activities. Vallianou Square, the main square in the heart of town, provides many restaurants, cafes and bars. On the seafront, Lixouri is very relaxing place, full of history and its own pace of development.

Beaches

The most famous and popular beach on the island is Myrtos. Also, Makris Gialos, along with Platis Gialos, its natural extension, are Argostoli locals’ preferred beaches. These are sandy beaches with fine golden sand. On the west side of the island and specifically in Paliki one can visit Petana beach. In the south of Cephalonia, one finds Skala, a kilometres-long, cosmopolitan, sandy beach with large hotel units. Antisamos, the beach that made it to Holywood, is a bay located next and to the east of the port of Sami. Near Lixouri, you can find Xi, an organized beach, known for its unique beauty. It is surrounded by sandy rocks with bright red, healing clay, and has warm shallow waters.

Sailing and Yachting

For sailing and yachting aficionados, the Ionian is one of the favourite seas throughout the Mediterranean. Boat docking infrastructure can be found in Argostoli, Lixouri, Poros, Sami, Agia Efimia, and of course, in the cosmopolitan and picturesque Fiskardo. Also, Kefalonia has plenty of organized water sports facilities. In the largest and most cosmopolitan beaches such as Skala, Makris Gialos, Lourdas, Ai-Helis in Livathos, Xi and Lepeda in Paliki, there are beach volley courts. What is more, Sea kayaking is one of the most enjoyable and environmentally friendly ways to enjoy the Ionian Sea. Furthermore, Kefalonia is considered a diver’s destination. The rare marine flora is truly impressive. The underwater caves in Fiscardo and the wonderful seabed in Agia Efimia, Skala, Argostoli and Paliki stand out and attract many divers every year. For the most experienced, the sunken submarine ‘’Perseas’’ in the open sea between Kefalonia and Zakynthos at a depth of 52 m constitutes a big challenge.

Best boat trips in Kefalonia

Enjoy a relaxing yet active day cruising around Ithaca on a yacht. Travelers who don’t enjoy big, noisy groups will appreciate the intimate small-group setting. Sail to beaches in sheltered bays, some of which are considered to be among the most beautiful beaches in Greece.

Embark from Agia Efimia’s harbor on an Ocean Star 51.2ft modern sailing boat called “Venus”.

With a full day ahead, we meet at 8:45 am outside of the yacht which is moored at the beginning of the picturesque harbor of Agia Efimia,  to spend a gorgeous full day sailing aboard a modern sailing boat. An experienced crew is dedicated to making you spend an unforgettable sailing experience around the most beautiful spots in Ithaca.

Your day starts with a long sail toward the south of Ithaca, having a first swim stop at Talaros beach, where you can snorkel in its crystalline blue-green waters, and have a snack/ drink at the end.

Not long after, we will set course towards the paradise on earth, called Gidaki Beach. Gidaki is considered by many people the best beach in Ithaca, while it is often ranked among the best beaches in Greece! The turquoise blue waters and the natural landscape with the scenic, lush vegetation impress every visitor. It’s a pebbled beach with larger pebbles on the western side and smaller ones on the east. The bay is open, ideal for swimming from one side to the other.

As soon as we leave, another highlight stop awaits, Skinos bay beach, where we prepare our lunch which is served on board along with soft drinks, beers, and local wine. Skinos is the bay to the east of Ithaca, with the homonymous beach. It is surrounded by pine trees and the scenery is breathtaking. After lunch, we keep on sailing to the east coast of Ithaca and Filiatro Beach is our last selected spot for the day. The waters of Filiatro’s bay are calm, warm, and smooth, ideal for swimming. Once we have taken our fill of this little gem of Ithaca, we sail back to Agia Efimia arriving at the port around 18:00.
